Backcountry skating and skiing on the frozen sea in Vihiluoto

The sea is frozen off Oulu and Kempele usually from January until the end of March (note: check the ice thickness with the locals before going out on the ice). Vihiluoto Village Association makes a skating and cross-country skiing trail on the sea ice in front of Vihiluoto in winter, weather permitting. The skating trail is maintained by volunteers and, like all sea ice, is exposed to the weather. Ice skating, cycling, skiing, ice fishing and walking on the sea ice are popular activities among the locals. From Vihiluoto, you can easily get to the ice and enjoy a meal at Vihiluoto Torpa restaurant or stay at Vihiluoto Finlandia Hotel Airport Oulu, which also has a Spanish restaurant, El Sabor.
